Composition Contest
The International Harp Competition & Festival, The Netherlands has held a Contest for composers.
Participants composed a piece for solo harp of 5 minutes, with no other instruments or electronic means involved.
Results:
Out of 19 compositions, one has been chosen to be performed during the festival:
- "Prosa in Miniatura", by Felix Ceunen
Two compositions deserve an honorable mention:
- "Slow Sift", by Tim Watts
- Part V of "Shadows, five miniatures for solo harp", by Maurizio Tessitore
The comments of the jury:
The jury, consisting of composers Carlos Micháns and Daan Manneke and harpist Liesbeth Vreeburg, had the following comments.
About "Prosa in Miniatura": The many characteristic gestures form a colourful palette. In a short time span the the piece develops into a caleidoscopic composition, that can remain interesting. The composer approaches the instrument in an original way, without using the cliches.
About "Slow Sift": The composition is conceived from a certain abstraction, through which cliches are being avoided. The composer looks for a content instead of a technical-instrumental approach.
About "Shadows, part V": A spicy piece with a great effectivity, which is very suitable as an encore.
"Prosa in Miniatura", by Felix Ceunen, will be performed during the 1st International Harp Competition & Festival, on Wednesday the 24th of March 2010.
